Stakeholder Engagement

Enabling and assuring accessibility and acceptability through early engagement of key stakeholders

Goal

To enable the rapid introduction, evaluation, and acceptance of “single shot” cures for HIV and SCD in low- and middle-income countries by engaging stakeholders across communities and healthcare systems.

Background and Current Landscape

The burden of HIV and sickle cell disease (SCD) disproportionately affects low-and-middle income countries (LMICs).  In sub-Saharan Africa, the upcoming and unprecedented forecasted rise in the youth demographic, a population with a high incidence of HIV transmission, could result in an increase in the absolute number of people living with HIV (PLWH) in the region. Meanwhile, treatment options for those living with SCD are few and far between – and it is projected that many of the millions born with this disease will not survive beyond childhood. Safe and effective “single-shot” in vivo curative interventions for HIV and SCD could enhance and save the lives of millions. Yet, given the complexities of delivery and administration, these curative therapies for SCD and HIV will likely require an evolution of target product profiles, starting with those that are complex and progressing to others more simple.

As has been the case in multiple other introductions of innovative medical treatments, early engagement of key stakeholders is important not only to inform the discovery and development of effective cures but also to assure their ultimate acceptability and uptake.

Investments in this subdomain support the convening of different, multidisciplinary groups to build inclusive models and programs. The goal of this subdomain is to ensure that when a curative intervention becomes available, there will be dedicated support and strategies for implementing these solutions where they are most needed across the African continent and globally.
